Well, he isn't the Asian Prince. But Kumar
Biswajit, whose fans call him simply Kumar Biswajit, is known to all
Bangladeshis as one of our foremost rock singers, pop artist and playboy of
international fame. He performed at the John M. Tobin Middle School at
Cambridge, Massachusetts, today. He is on a tour of the USA, and will be playing
Los Angeles, Dallas and New York before returning to Bangladesh to kick it raw
style. Almost a hundred and fifty Bangladeshis of all shapes and colors (well,
mostly brown) came to see his show, and all of us clapped to show our enthusiasm
and appreciation. Every now and then the experience would be marred by the
children of concertgoers (including Kumar's own son) running around but hey,
that's the fuckin' price you pay for rock 'n' roll, and if you can't take the
heat well tough luck, bunky.
Here's a picture of him from back in the
day:
I was fortunate enough to get a copy of his new album, which is
mainly new versions of his old songs. Here's a scan of the cover where, as
you'll see, he's aged well:
I guess you want to hear what this dashing heartthrob sounds
like, huh? Well, here's an mp3 (--aps of course) of one of his world-shaking
hits, Tore Putuler Moto Kore Shajiye. It translates to I'm Gonna Dress
You Up Like a Doll.
Kumar Biswajit - Tore Putuler Moto
Kore ShajiyeBut one song's
never enough! Here's Roopshagore, a pop version of an old folk
song:
Kumar Biswajit -
RoopshagoreA true fan has
bootlegs, and I, good fag, am a true fan. Here are two live songs. The first is
Tore Putuler Moto Kore Shajiye, and the second is his hit from 1982,
which was also used in the advertisement for Sword Razor Blades (one of our
first color commercials!). It's called Tumi Roj Bikele, and the refrain
goes:
Tumi roj bikele amar bagaane
phul kurate asho
Janina tumi ki phul naki amakei beshi bhalobasho"
which
translates to:
[i]You come to my garden every day to pick my flowers
But I
don't know what you love more-- the flowers or me!
Tore Putuler Moto Kore
ShajiyeTumi Roj BikeleI don't know how to use my camera well, so I apologize for the quality,
but I couldn't resist taking a small video of him singing with a cowbell in one
hand and a stick in the other.
downloadBut that's not all! I took many, many pictures, and here
they are:
I took a picture with the man:
as
did my mother:
and
some other people I don't know:
Some
more pictures of his performance that came out insanely shitty but are worth
it:
This final one's a table-breaker but it's also the
best:
